Late april weather

I have four pages left in this sketchbook (Hand Book Journal). I'll probably not start another weather journal.

  1. Great posts, although the fire is so scary - I would love to know what paints you use in these handbook journals? your colors stay so vibrant, where my artist quality paints seem to be absorbed like a sponge and become dull in these journals? But I love the journals otherwise for size and ability to take water.

  2. thank you sandy. I use artist quality Holbein and Winsor Newton watercolors. I use them out of the tube for brilliance, as opposed to rewetting dried paint.
This paper does absorb them alot, so I add several layers if I have time. The reason I started the weather sketchbook, was that I didn't like the paper at first, and just wanted to fill the book up fast. Then, I started to like the paper. It has great lift off qualities and I like the fact that the books are not precious.
I'm not sure that I will order more books though. I don't like the color of the paper, or the feel of the cover...

  3. I love your weather notebooks. The idea, and your creative ideas about what how to illustrate the day. Please don't stop!

  4. I also love your weather journals. So creative and beautifully done. However, one can never just stay in one place and expect to grow.

    The fire painting is amazing.

  6. Love these little paintings. I know what you mean about the quality of the paper and the feel of the cover of these hand.books. It takes some getting used to. I go through phases. I do love your work though, whatever the support. And I love the idea of the weather journal.

I hope that you'll continue doing and posting these little watercolor sketches even if they don't include weather reports. Whenever I visit there's always a sensation of awe as the images pop from the screen. Thanks for explaining about WC straight from the tube. I've been using crusty (even moldy I'm embarrassed to admit) watercolor in my palette but I know fresh painter is, well, fresher. I've gotten used to using oils in the way you've described, so why not WC too? I'll have to give it a try.

Do you squeeze out all of your standard palette colors each time, or just as you need them? What do you use for a palette? Do you wash it out between uses so that there's only fresh paint on it?

  10. Thanks for the visit Jana. I hope I answered your question in the May 4 entry, which I meant to put in as a comment instead of a post.

  11. Dee, I will miss your weather journal too. You have such a lovely light touch with your watercolour sketches and I imagine you will carry this over into big pictures.

I trust you will find a new journal theme to delight us as well ;)

Dee, I'll miss your weather journal, like everyone else--not only is it stunningly beautiful and a constant delight each time I check in with you, but it's given me a very human, very real connection to my other home, where my husband was born.

We do have to move on, sometimes, and I know whatever you do will be of this same high caliber...but please do share it?
