Magnolia

Two weather sketchbook entries. Magnolia from M.'s tree. Ink and watercolor. I have a wonderful Pentel ink/brush pen from Japan that was given to me by a person living in London. I haven't seen one like it in the states. He gave me plenty of refills for it, so I hope it lasts for a while. The "car splashing water" image is from a new series of watercolors I hope to do of cars splashing water. This image is based on an image from the newspaper which is how my firefighter series started. firefighter. And click here too. I'll be posting some of my older "newspaper image series" that I did a couple of years ago. The newspaper is great inspiration for me. I have always liked ink and newsprint.

  1. Which newspaper do you like the most? You can get anything over the internet now, and save trees. I don't really like the one local to me, so I chose a weekly from Colorado Springs, The Colorado Springs Independant. Plus it's distributed free.

I once tried a bunch of abstract things with discarded ink from where I worked in Austin, TX, but it was so thick that it never dried! ( worked briefly at the Whitley Company there as a platemaker.)

Do you use some sort of frisket to preserve the white of the splashes? I imagine one could use a toothbrush to spray it on, sort of like the way a texture gun sprays texture on a wall.

  2. You got such a varied line from that ink brush! Lovely - and I really like the water splashing - is it white acrylic? I like newspapers for inspiration, too.

  3. Oh, a new series! I really liked your fire series and this one will have similar movement and dynamism. Great idea!

  4. Thanks for the reminder about those brushes. I've been looking at a bright bouquet of flowers trying to decide what media to use to capture them and now I know -- I have one of those too and they're great. I love the idea of the car splashing water paintings and your magnolia is lovely and bold.

  5. ooh, the brush work is soo sumi-looking and perf for the magnolia. And what a clever (or impossibly difficult) subject of cars splashing water...hmmm. can't wait to see more.

I've just popped in to your blog to have a look, and it's a joy to look at your work. What a great idea the car splashing paintings! I will browse around at some more of your work before leaving.
